How to apply to be a lighthouse keeper

We would like to be a volunteer caretaker at the Rock Island Lighthouse this summer. How should we proceed and to whom should we apply? - Carole, Madison, Wis.

Unfortunately, March 1 was the deadline to apply for docent jobs at Pottawatomie Light on Wisconsin's Rock Island.

The Friends of Rock Island recruit volunteers to spend a week at this 1858 lighthouse at the farthest tip of Door County. If you're interested in working there next year, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to become a member of the group. For more on Rock Island, see Wisconsin's Icelandic outpost.
